About our Charities

Ian Burnell Trust

The Trust was set up in memory of Ian Burnell, an enthusiastic and passionate individual who, having completed his first year as a junior doctor in Cardiff's Heath hospital, had made plans to spend a year working in a rural hospital in South Africa. Sadly, he died in a mountaineering accident in May 2007. ian burnell trust logo

His family and friends sought to honour his legacy by allowing like-minded individuals to carry on his medical work abroad. The IBT seeks to do so by allowing individuals to apply to the Trust for small grants, which they can take to give to the impoverished clinics and hospitals they visit overseas.

You can find out more about the Trust on their website at ianburnelltrust.org.uk.

Tshwaranang

There is a word in Sotho, one of the native languages of South Africa. That word is Tshwaranang. Literally translated, it means "joining hands", but it can mean much more than that. Unity can be the foundation from which the world is lifted up, for people of every race and tribe to join together, building up communities of strength, love and hope.tshwaranang logo

Tshwaranang is a charity based in the Free State, in South Africa. Operating from a town called Harrismith, they work in the surrounding area, especially within the nearest townships; Intabazwe, Tshiame and Mokgolokoeng.

Compared with many other regions within Africa, the area is relatively affluent, yet there are still many people living in appalling conditions, and families struggling within the worst poverty possible. HIV and AIDS is a devastating force within the community, with some estimates putting the local infection level at 20% in the most badly hit areas.

Through projects of their own initiative, and also through channelling resources for others, they aim to transform the local community; they currently support Hope House orphanage, as well as work in the local townships and feeding kitchens elsewhere.

The Raffa Home

The Raffa Home is an orphanage in India, currently looking after seven orphans who have HIV/AIDS. It is one of a number of church-led community projects in New Delhi, India, working with some of the most marginalised groups in their society. Whilst HIV/AIDS is acknowledged in many Indian communities, the stigma attached to the virus can be huge. Many of the boys are there because their parents have been unable to look after them, or have not known how to cope.

The Raffa Home are currently hoping for funding to move to a bigger location in the city. At Names Not Numbers we are committed to raising regular monthly amounts to support them in this new phase, and in the ongoing costs of the home. These include food, water purification, school supplies, transport and household necessities.

Tshwaranang is dedicated to supporting small charities: the Raffa Home do not yet have their own website.
